Hi Reading Ninjas, I love to read autobiographies (as opposed to biographies). I love to hear about a persons life, in their own voice, from their perspective. And no matter your politics, I think you'll really enjoy reading Michelle Obama's
BECOMING
This is her life story (thus far), told by Michelle. She's so much more than the First Lady with great arms. Michelle is a passionate woman who refused to allow her modest beginning define or limit her life. In fact, she fought tooth and nail from a very young age to rise above her situation and become who she was meant to be, destined to be and not who she was expected to be.
There are some funny moments in her history, some tender moments, some confronting, some amusing tidbits about the man who would rule the world and lots of normal, everyday, pull your hair out working mum moments. In short, the woman behind the man is someone who is a great leader in her own right and her husband is almost an 'also ran' in her story, although we all know, a great portion of her recent history revolved around him. What rings out the loudest in Becoming is simply that Michelle Obama is a woman and mum, just like the rest of us, with kids who are sassy and a hubby who doesn't pick up his socks and a life that's just as crazy and individual as each of ours. She's super relatable and tells her own story clearly with tongue in cheek amusement and a who lotta heart. I had tears in my eyes when she talks about the Sandy Hook shooting.
No matter where you sit politically, no matter where in the world you live - Becoming is a book that I think you'll really enjoy and will inspire you to try to become who you were truely meant to be, even if it's simply in a tiny, insignificant to anyone other than you, way.
